MŽ #33 - Jaunā materialitāte

Neskatoties uz to, ka augusta Mākslas žurnālam dota tēma “Jaunā materialitāte”, pašas materialitātes ideja mākslā nemaz nav nekāds jaunums. Laikmetīgajā mākslā materialitātes nozīme aizvien pieaug un to veicina gan izmaiņas sociālajā diskursā, gan ekoloģiskajā domāšanā. Tas mākslas diskusijās aktualizē jautājumu — kā jauno materialitāti pat vērtēt mākslas tapšanā, idejiski un praktiski? Mākslas darba materialitāte vēsta vairāk nekā tikai par konkrēta materiāla izmantojumu, bet aptver arī biotisko informāciju, kas saistīta ar mākslas darba fizisko esamību — tostarp tapšanas vietu un sižetiem mākslinieka personīgajā vēsturē. Arī šī mēneša žurnāla autoru darbi parāda atšķirīgas pieejas materiāla pētniecībai, attiecībām, formām un to uzslāņojumiem. Ceļojums materialitātes pasaulē ir neizbēgams, tā galvenais mērķis ir reflektēt pieredzi un kurētībai veltīt daļu no tā. Sadaļā iekļauti gan teorētiski numura tekstu raksti un intervijas, tostarp komentāri par Latvijas laikmetīgās mākslas scēnu, gan plašāks, simtpadmit lappušu garumā cirkulējošs nozares diskurss, un arī lasītājs teju pats var piedalīties, jo tēmturētie jautājumi vienlaikus pārvēršas tost retorikā.

Although the August issue of Mākslas Žurnāls is dedicated to the theme “New Materiality,” the idea of materiality in art itself is nothing new. In contemporary art, the importance of materiality continues to grow, driven by shifts in social discourse and ecological thinking. This raises a key question in art discussions: how should new materiality be evaluated in the context of artistic creation, both conceptually and practically? The materiality of an artwork conveys much more than the use of a specific material—it also encompasses biotic information related to the physical existence of the artwork, including the place of its creation and narratives rooted in the artist’s personal history. This month’s issue presents authors whose works explore different approaches to material research, relationships, forms, and their layers. A journey through materiality is inevitable, and its main purpose is to reflect on experience and dedicate a space to curatorial practices. The issue includes both theoretical texts and interviews, as well as commentary on the Latvian contemporary art scene. In over 110 pages, a broader discussion unfolds, inviting the reader to participate—turning curated questions into rhetorical prompts.
